Pollywogs | A film by Karl Jacob. A Movie Review and Interview

June 14, 2013 9:30 pm US/Pacific

Pollywogs a film by Karl Jacob | presented by KJax Films.

Los Angeles, CA - Pollywogs, written and directed by Karl Jacob, had its World Premiere at the 2013 Los Angeles Film Festival. It is a nostalgic narrative of rejection, contradictions, loss and transformation.

Dylan (played by Karl Jacob) is emerging from an acrid breakup and is struggling to both find himself and figure out his future. He goes back home to Minnesota for a family reunion and welcomes the warmth and love afforded him by his embracing, affectionate family.

Dylan's closest allies are his cousin Julie (Jennifer Prediger) and her husband Bo (Larry Mitchell). Bo, who is more like a brother than an in-law, gives Dylan pause as he shares his personal thoughts of longing and regret.

Surrounded by the breathtaking Minnesota scenery, brilliantly filmed by Cinematographist Benjamin Kasulke, Dylan keeps himself busy with family gatherings and fun antics as he broods over his thoughts until he finds himself suddenly reunited with his childhood sweetheart, Sarah (Kate Lyn Sheil), who had been relocated to a religious compound when they were young.

As Pollywogs progresses, we are given candid snapshots into the past, showing us the relationship of Dylan and Sarah bud and flower. As memories of the past connect and crash with the realities of the present, Dylan becomes aware that in understanding his past, he unlocks his future.

Karl Jacob, writer, director and lead, has given us a nuanced blend of structure and naturalism. He has cleverly woven humor, emotion, and the complexities of the individual into a story that is an open-ended, glimpse in time.

Change the place, setting, names, and Pollywogs would still ring true. We are enigmatic beings affected by our past as much as our present, but our future unfolds as we respond to both.

The "IN" Show had the distinct pleasure to talk with both Karl Jacob and fellow cast member, Larry Mitchell. Karl shared his passion behind Pollywogs and where it's heading. Both gave a candid look at movie-making, acting and the value of a good story. Enjoy.
