Under the Mexican Sky: Gabriel Figueroa

September 17, 2013 | Hollywood, CA

Under the Mexican Sky: Gabriel Figueroa

The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (LACMA) and The Academy collaborated on the co-presentation of a major U.S. exhibition highlighting the "Prolific Career of Mexican Cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa."

This exhibition, "Under the Mexican Sky: Gabriel Figueroa" is an absolute, must-see! The exquisite layout is highlighted by cleverly crafted film-viewing stations, an astonishing array of prints and original artwork by those who had a strong influence on Figueroa, and an exciting display of iconic Hollywood memorabilia - courtesy of The Academy.

With much attention to detail, the curators have created a program that explores this cinematographer's vast body of work and his lasting impact in the filmmaking scope of cinematography.

It has long been said that Gabriel Figueroa is the "Fourth Muralist of Mexico." LACMA Director Michael Govan, during the opening ceremony of the exhibit, gave delightful insight into both the reason for this prevalent train of thought; as well as, the value of having just such an exhibit which highlights Figueroa's accomplishments, abilities, and ingenuities.

Gabriel Figueroa's career entailed over 200 films! Many of his finest taking place in the Entertainment Capital of the World, Hollywood! He had a direct hand and lasting influence in such great films as "Two Mules for Sister Sara", "Kelly's Heroes", and "Under the Volcano". Those films' makings, the major influences (such as Jose Clemente Orozco, David Siqueiros, and Diego Rivera) and the creative forces that made Figueroa the genius he was are on display.

For anyone interested in art, cinema, history, cultural studies, and detail, the exhibit Under the Mexican Sky: Gabriel Figueroa is a priceless opportunity to see it all under one roof.
