Eat With Me the Movie

FRANK
a Lenny Abrahamson film.

Los Angeles, CA - FRANK, by acclaimed Irish director Lenny Abrahamson, is an offbeat comedy about Jon (Domhnall Gleeson), a young wanna-be musician, who discovers he's bitten off more than he can chew when he joins an eccentric pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank.

SYNOPSIS: The film begins with would-be musician Jon invited to join the band right before a concert, only asked if he is able to play a few notes. It becomes increasingly clear that Jon is finding himself out of his depth around Frank (Michael Fassbender) - the musical genius who hides himself inside a large fake head - and his terrifying bandmate Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

During LAFF 2014, The IN Show had the unique opportunity to interview Mr. Abrahamson on his film. Here are a few excerpts from that interview: to hear the entire interview you can listen to the audio here or here.

My first question is, what made you want to do a movie about a big giant head?

"Well, you know, had somebody put it to me like that, I think I probably would have said thanks but no thanks. But I read an early version of the script...and it changed a lot in developing...but it was just something about the way the character worked that was intriguing and kind of moving as well as being ridiculous and funny. It was a kind of territory that I had not really seen in a film before...and I couldn't really get this crazy character out of my head."

Do you think an extra element helped with the film because of Jon [Ronson]'s relationship with Chris Sievey?

"Yeah, I think definitely. It was the spark. It also got Jon thinking about...what would it be like if somebody like that was real. If somebody...for whatever reason...couldn't really operate without that protection."

Were you trying to reach...the heart of the story, the heart of this character?

"Yes! I mean, I'm always, I don't ever like anything to be one dimensional and I think one of the reasons why they were interested in me and the same reason I was interested in the project was just the feeling that you could kind of ground the story into something quite real that would touch people."

how filmmaking is like a relationship,
the gravity Michael Fassbender brought to the film,
and what FRANK can tell us about the mask we each hide behind.
